Soundtracks

Before I begin, let me elaborate on this topic, because this generated MANY questions from my younger audience.  I am speaking about movies with actual songs used throughout them, not just musical score or background.  Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Jaws, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter....those use Score.  Save those for a later date. (You can bet there will be a topic on Top Musical Score).  Now...the hard part....don't forget to look at the BIG picture for soundtracks...not just one good song.

Top 3 Soundtracks

(always in no particular order)
Forrest Gump
Forrest Gump is a movie that crosses onto so many lists for love and hate.  Highly unlikely, that this film will make it on to any of my other lists, but the soundtrack is tops.  The two-cd soundtrack set that was released has a very slight taste of what was in the movie, but still...awesome.  The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Buffalo Springfield, Jefferson Airplane, Three Dog Night...and my favorite scene with music...Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Pulp Fiction
Pulp Fiction is another movie that probably wont be on any other lists for me.  Great movie, love to watch it over and over....and super unique style that has been attempted to be copied numerous times.  Honestly, the first time I saw it in the theater...I didn't even get it.  Was not really impressed by it.  My second time though...it clicked and I loved it.  The music really ties it all together.  Quentin Tarantino really likes to be "cool" with his pop-culture references, but his music selections work...and well. Side Note: Not a family friendly movie

Blow
Blow.  My girlfriend had to introduce me to this film.  I never had any real interest in watching this, but she got me to sit through it....and I thoroughly enjoyed it.  Then I realized that I had the soundtrack on my IPOD...and well...here we are on this list.  Lots of songs that I didn't even know or recognize, but they really grow on you.  See for yourself here.  Side Note: Not a family friendly movie

Next weeks Topic: Black and White Movies (Doesnt have to be old...just Black and White)

Ok soundtracks :). Well I am an older movie watcher. I'm 61 years old and have seen and heard a lot of movies. I don't know if these will count but here goes. If it is just the songs you want from a movie and not the score, these are my favorites. 1 Of course (Forrest Gump) I lived the era. 2 If you like oldies which of course I do, it would be (Hollywood Knights)a very funny movie with lots of great oldies playing through out. 3 Dumb and Dumber also had a lot of great songs played through out. I know for a fact there are a lot of movies that have great songs in them but I think the two most famous movies known for their music is (Grease) and (Dirty Dancing). These movie soundtracks will be listened to for generations to come, and that's my 2 cents worth.

Wow...Grease and Dirty Dancing. Didnt even think of those. For me, part of it is the film first, then the music. Since I am not a huge fan of either of those...it didnt click...but the music in both of those are awesome. Good call. Im actually really looking forward to the Score topic. That is going to be very hard for me to narrow down.

This is kind of a weird topic, and I am not entirely sure how to answer this question, but to preface, I am going to answer it in a way that I went and actually bought/downloaded the soundtracks for because I loved the music in them...

1) Almost all of the classic Disney Movies (Alladin, Lion King, Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Mary Poppins, Toy Story, A Goofy Movie, Pocohontas, etc.). I know this is kind of a cop-out to put all of them in 1 spot, but for creating a list's sake, I put them all into the number 1 spot.

2) West Side Story - I loved this movie and the songs in it. It is a dream of mine to see a two gangs break out into "dance fights" and sing these songs. And all of the songs are fantastic.

3) O' Brother Where are't Though - The soundtrack for this movie was awesomely fantastic. With the "Soggy Bottom Boys" song that I cant think of the name of, Down to the River, I'll Fly Away, etc. The songs really tied the movie together and made it quite epic.

Honorable Mentions - Breakfast Club, Rocky Horror, South Park:The Movie (it was a hilarious soundtrack), and Singing In The Rain.
