Sports Movies

I have a feeling I will get crucified on this category, but I still included it.  Not a huge fan of sports movies, because I always hope that the story revolves more around the characters, then the sport itself.  My top 3 here this week reflect upon movies that I like to watch, that were more than just about the sport itself.  I will also preface, that I have never seen what is usually regarded as the best sports movie of all time, in addition to being one of the best movies ever made: Raging Bull.  Someone have it on DVD...I'll watch it.  Aside from that....let it go.  Oh...by the way...Rudy I wont even watch anymore.  I met the REAL Rudy in High School, and he was an arrogant, narcissistic little man.  I was never more put off by a "motivational speaker" in my entire life.  Ruined it for me.

Top 3 Sports Movies

(always in no particular order)
Remember the Titans
Remember the Titans.  Chills....throughout most of this movie.  If you haven't seen it, you need to.  Quickly.  I opted to NOT choose the most inspirational quotes of the movie for the below clip, because it gives away too much.  This clip just makes me laugh.

Major League
Major League.  Not all films have to be dramatic or inspirational.  This one just kills me.  Since Charlie Sheen is the big pop culture topic right now, this selection just might seem relevant.  Regardless, I still think its funnier than sin.  Wesley Snipes always seems to excel in sports movies. (Wildcats, White Men Can't Jump).

A League of Their Own
League of Their Own.  Okay...so its kind of a chick flick.  Whatever.  I had to do a term paper for my Women in Cinema Class in College.  I chose this one.  Glad I did, because I really grew an appreciation for this movie.  I think its fun, family friendly, and well written.  Pretty much an all-star cast too.

Next weeks Topic: Movies about Transportation (at least where the mode of transportation is an important aspect of the film)

So I don't know exactly how this blog thing goes, I know my dad has been participating. My 3 favorite sports movies are Lucas, Stealing Home, and Sandlot.

I agree with the Sandlot, but many people (including myself) consider it more of a "Coming of age" movie than a sports movie.

Here we go. Sports movies. I think the best sports movie ever made was (The Natural).
Best ending ever in a movie.
Next would be (Major League).
One of charlie Sheen's best.
there have been a lot of sports movies made but these are my favorites.
Last but not least is (A league Of Their Own).
A story that was actually part of our history.
These are honorable mentions :
The Babe
Damn Yankees
Brian's Song
And that's my opinion :)

I had a hard time not including Sandlot in my list, because it really is such a great movie, but I agree with Ian...I regard it as a coming of age film (at its core). Uncle Randy, i KNEW you were going to put the Natural on your list. Youre actually the one that got me into that theme song from it. Benji...good for you for putting Dodgeball on there. That movie was stupid as all get out...but truly an entertaining movie. "Grab life by the ball". (FYI...I actually have a dodgeball that says that on it.

Wow... I cant believe its Friday and I havnt thrown my 2 cents in... I am disappointed in many people here for leaving out some of the essentials... Although I agree that sandlot and Rocky would normally top a list like this, but others have mentioned those, so I will leave them out. The Natural is also one of my favorites. Today's honorable mention will be kinda long, but here goes:

1) Might Ducks - Seriously? How has this not been brought up already? This movie started a revolution for Hockey, and caused Disney to actually make a Pro NHL team called the Ducks....

2) Field of Dreams - I am a little disappointed that the older crowd hasnt mentioned this one. This is such a classic movie, and it has a certain amount of magic involved in it also. I get chills everytime I see Ray Liotta disappear into the cornfield.

3) The Karate Kid - "Your the best, around! No one's ever gunna get you down." This movie taught me every karate move I will ever need to know... and also to sweep the legs.

Honorable mentions:
Eight Men Out, Jerry Maguire, Talladega Nights, Sea Biscuit, Happy Gilmore, The Replacements, Days of Thunder, Over the Top, Cool Runnings, and Varsity Blues

Cool Runnings only gets and Honorable mention? Really?

1. COOL RUNNING- Amazing story about a team that lost where it mattered but won in our hearts...im gonna cry a little bit.

2. Dodge Ball- Absolute sports movie and by far the best line comes from Lance Armstrong.

Peter La Fleur: Uh, actually I decided to quit... Lance.
Lance Armstrong: Quit? You know, once I was thinking of quitting when I was diagnosed with brain, lung and testicular cancer all at the same time. But with the love and support of my friends and family, I got back on the bike and won the Tour de France five times in a row. But I'm sure you have a good reason to quit. So what are you dying of that's keeping you from the finals?
Peter La Fleur: Right now it feels a little bit like... shame.
Lance Armstrong: Well, I guess if a person never quit when the going got tough, they wouldn't have anything to regret for the rest of their life. Well good luck to you Peter. I'm sure this decision won't haunt you forever.

amazing.

3. MIGHTY DUCKS. quack quack quack quack quack quack quack quack.

I loved Miracle, Remember the Titans, Rudy- not really a sports movie though.
And the one about the baseball player... who is the teacher and goes back to baseball and the whole town is behind him..... starts with the nuns and the rose petals.

Honorable mentions: Dodgeball, Miracle, and Rocky. I'll give Blade of Glory some props, too. It's so bad, it's good.
