Gangster Films

Gangster.  Interpret that how you will.  I have about 20 different archetypes in my head for what I believe is a Gangster.  This will be a tough one since this is one of my favorite genres (Mafioso types).  You will notice that The Godfather is absent from this list.  Although this is regarded as one of the best of all time, I was never much of a fan.  Sue me.  Dont have much more of an introduction.  Go for it.  :-)  NOTE: NONE of these clips or movies are family friendly....you've been warned.

Top 3 Gangster Films

(always in no particular order)
Goodfellas
Goodfellas.  First and foremost, this film is "based" upon true events. However skewed these accounts may be, I am sure there are many real elements here.  Also, since it deviates from your standard narrative (using multiple narrators), you are getting the story from many angles.  One of my favorite movies of all time.  NOTE: This is a long clip.

The Departed
The Departed.  Back to an ensemble cast.  On paper, I would be concerned that the star-power of this film would detract from the story or that some of the actors would drag down the others.  Not the case.  Each actor complements the other, and even the "big" stars that don't have a huge role...SHINE in the movie.  I am at a point where I can talk along with the dialogue since I have seen it so many times.

A Bronx Tale
A Bronx Tale.  This was a tough one for me but it has so many elements in it that I love.  First, Robert DeNiro is a good guy. Second, its a Coming of Age story, which is one of my favorite genres of films.  Third, it isnt riddled with big names.  Lots of moral decisions being made.

Honorable Mention:
Menace II Society & Boyz in the Hood
Gangsta movies.  Gangster with an "A".  Besides being fun to watch, the story is great.  Neither are family friendly films.  Trust me.  MenaceBoyz.

Casino: Almost a sequel to Goodfellas, I liked it a little better and saw it first. I'm a sucker for things in Vegas. Goodfellas isn't far behind. Also, I liked Joe Pesci's role in this one more, even thought they were almost the same character.

Ocean's 11: Not gangsters in the typical sense, but they are a gang - kinda. Anyway, they're committing a crime, its organized, and there's a group of them. Excellent cast, great story with lots of cool twists.

Gangs of New York: I just saw this one not too long ago. I like really long movies, part of the reason I liked Casino a lot, too. I liked this one, though, in part because of Leo DiCaprio and Daniel Day-Lewis, but also because of how historically accurate it is. And I'm not talking about the feud between the natives and the Irish, but the tension was real, and a lot of the details were. Tweed's portrayal was spot on, the fire departments worked like that back then, there really was a riot in New York because of the drafts, and all the fires really caused a "burned over district" around that time. So points for being a good historical movie as well as gangster.

Gangster movies. I love Gangster movies and here are my top 3.
1. (The Godfather) by far the best Gangster movie ever made.
2. ( The Untouchables) was a great film following the TV show.
3. (Bugsy) one of my favorites and shows a little bit of how Las Vegas got started.
Those are my 3 and sorry for being so late. I am healing from a dirt bike accident and have not been able to type.

1Casino: my wife that loves all the lovey dove Disney films will ALWAYS stop and watch this whole movie if its on TV and for good reason. Favorite Mob Gangster movie of all time. Joe Pessci is just amazing (dont correct my spelling).

2. Warriors: Waaaarrriooorrrrs Come out to playay! Such a cool line from such a campy gang movie. anyone that knows me knows that I like bad movies. The different gangs in this movie and the opening scene of "CAN YOU DIG IT!" so bad yet so devilishly good.

3.and the I cant believe my brother didnt put these 2 movies in his list. Boyz n the Hood and Menace 2 society. The only reason i saw either of these is because of him. My favorite is Boyz n the Hood and will go on the list. I read through breakdowns of this movie and am amazed at how much detail was put in even if you didnt notice, its there. Look past the language and violence and you get one helluva movie.
